Want to get ahead at work Be happy.

Want to get ahead at work Be happy.Want to get ahead at work Be happy.Im not an inherently positive and optimistic person. Im also kind of proud of that. I love the part of me thats sarcastic and dark. I like that my snarky comments make people laugh. I also believe maintaining a healthy amount of cynicism is what makes me feel intellectually superior. Ignorance is bliss, after all. But I do (begrudgingly) realize there are concrete ways that being happy at work can get you ahead. A study in the Journal of Personal Psychology noted that positive emotions actually help you get stronger when you face a major challenge being able to move on despite negative stressors does not demonstrate luck on the part of those successful individuals but demonstrates a concept known as resilience resilient individuals have optimistic, zestful, and energetic approaches to life, are curious and open to new experiences, and are characterized by high positive emotionality. So positivity is a good thing. L ets look at why.Being happy gives you a competitive edge. When faced with a problem, optimistic people see lots of possibilities. Positive thinking helps you see choices and outcomes that negative people dont, because theyre too focused on the limitations. Tom Brady, the man of the moment with five solid Super Bowl wins, prides himself on staying positive. I dont get caught up in negativity and bashing other people and Im very blessed. I get to do something I love to do, he answered when asked about a scandal affecting his team. Bradys favorite book is a self-help classic, The Four Agreements, whose author Miguel Ruiz has said, we must forgive those that have wronged us, not bc they deserve to be forgiven, but bc we dont want to keep paying for the injustice. When you absorb negativity, you keep paying for those injustices - and that slows you down. Being happy helps you stand out from the disgruntled crowd.Lets face it. A lot of workers in a lot of offices are not happy about bein g there. They complain, they whine, they talk about everything that they dont like. Their sour expressions and everything fails outlooks arent unique - theyre all too common. It takes vision to see that, even if things are broken, they can be fixed and they can improve. If you can cultivate that vision, youll reap a lot of recognition and maybe even some financial rewards.Being happy provides some job security.Well-liked people tend to go further in companies and life in general. As Harrison Barnes wrote in the Harvard Business Review, being well-liked in a work environment is an important thing in any job. If you are not liked by your peers, your superiors may think clients will not like you either. If superiors do not like you, you will not get a lot of work. If you are isolated from others within your organization, it is far easier to let you go in times of economic uncertainty. You need to always be in a position where others want to do you a favor and help you out. Likeability and positivity usually go together. Again, its all too common to see the downsides of work and be blind to the upsides. I saw this in my own life. When I was in college and waiting tables for a living, I got fired because my personality didnt have enough flair. Remember Jennifer Aniston in Office Space? Yep, that was me. When it comes to cuts and layoffs, Debbie Downer is definitely the first to go. Being happy pays. Its true. According to an economist in Australia who conducted a study, a person who is completely satisfied with life earns $1,766.7 more than one who is completely unsatisfied with life. So money still cant buy happiness, but happiness can make you money. Being happy even when you arent.Right now, I have a job I want to get up and go to, its a great company and a really fun place to work. Im a naturally positive person at work, but if I had a different job that I didnt like as much, what would I do? Quit? Thats one idea. But heres another, more interesting one. I can rewire my brain to be happy. Because I have superpowers? No, silly. Because I watched a TED Talk on the subject.According to Shawn Achor, the worlds leading positive psychology expert (yes, thats a thing) and the most popular teacher at Harvard, this is totally possible. Heres how it works. You write down three new things that youre grateful for 21 days in a row. Journaling about a positive experience you had during the past 24 hours allows your brain to relive it. And after three weeks of this, you start to retain a pattern of scanning the world for the positive, rather than the negative. elend only does this sound really cool, it sounds kind of fun, right? I guess thats the point.

In need of some inspiration Try doing nothing. No, seriously

In need of some inspiration Try doing nothing. No, seriouslyIn need of some inspiration Try doing nothing. No, seriouslyIn the midst of a sea of motivational quotes and a near-constant push for self-improvement, sometimes what you really need to do is just stop.Like many of us, I really enjoy scrolling through my Instagram. I usually glance at it when Im waiting on my bus or want to feel inspired by some beautiful photos of interior design, literature, art, or flowers, or to feel connected to my friends and family. And I love it for that reason. But lately, I think I have been falling into the comparison trap a bit, which is not so good. The idea that I should be handling it all - meditation and wellness, a consistent workout routine, a career, my relationships, keeping up with the never-ending news cycle and pop culture - is sometimes just plain overwhelming.Have you seen the memes about making plans and then being relieved when they fall through? I can so relate to it, as Im aya many of you can. Its interesting to me because the meme implies that we make those plans even though we dont truly want to follow through with them and that wed feel too guilty to cancel them ourselves. The guilt, then, is assuaged when someone else cancels for us. This is a problem. We shouldnt have to feel guilty if we are tired or overstimulated or if we just feel like staying in. Were all suffering from information overload, and theres a sense that we should feel guilty if were not working to better ourselves in some way all of the time.So my proposal is this that we allow ourselves to feel okay about doing absolutely nothing. If this is hard for you (and its hard for me), dont worry - studies prove that its actually really good for you, both mentally and physically.Increased productivityMany companies are catching on to this, but allowing for breaks and flexibility in your workday actually makes you more productive. If you want more proof, the Harvard Business Review cites stud y after study to explain that allowing yourself to have breaks helps you stay productive. Super busy but feeling that mid-afternoon slump? Go ahead, take a break. It will actually help you to do more, later.Increased creativityIn addition to productivity, if you allow yourself to have downtime, your creativity increases as well. According to Inc., when your mind is relaxed - when youre enjoying downtime - a different part of your brain is engaged. And this part of the brain is connected to problem-solving. So if youre feeling uninspired or stuck, it might help to go and take a walk, a nap, or pick up your phone at the bus stop and laugh at Instagram stories.Increased energyKnow that time of day where you just feel drained? Maybe its the mid-afternoon and you feel like youve crashed? Yeah, me too. Allowing yourself to stop will help this. Forget powering through instead, take a breakGrab a coworker and go walk around the block. Run down the street to the smoothie place and treat yo urself. Lay your head down on your desk and take a five-minute meditation. All of these things will help you to feel a little more energy than you did before.Increased focusIf youre worried about wasting time, dont. Its wrong to associate downtime with time wasting. Instead, it actually helps your brain process new information and solve problems. Letting your brain step away from whatever it is youre focusing on often helps you think of a new solution or perspective. When youre stuck or fading, its good to take a break to daydream or think of something other than the project at hand.Increased memoryFinally, downtime is also proven to help memory. Unsurprisingly, allowing yourself time to process what youre learning helps you remember it more clearly. If you feel like youre constantly forgetting things, maybe your age isnt to blame. Instead, it might be that your mind is overloaded with information and in need of a break. If you allow yourself to slow down a bit and enjoy some time t o daydream, chances are, your memory will improve as well.If youre feeling burned out from the business of it all, shake off the guilt and indulge in some downtime. Treat yourself (its proven to help) and you should feel better almost instantly. This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

When you should (or shouldnt) get a career coach

When you should (or shouldnt) get a career coachWhen you should (or shouldnt) get a career coachWhether youre looking for assistance on finding someone you can share forever-and-ever (and your Netflix) account with, or you cant tell your right foot from your left, there seems to be an expert available to assist. From life gurus to fitness instructors and matchmakers and anyone else for hire, we are part of an age where self-improvement isnt just healthy but trendy. While the concept of a career coach isnt a modern concept, in recent years, it has become mora popular and accessible to various budgets, allowing more professionals to utilize their wisdom. But what do they do exactly?Career advice expert for TopInterview Amanda Augustine explains these smarties possess a unique combination of expertise to help you navigate the murky waters of job seeking and management, helping you to come out confident at the end. If youve considered investing in this one-on-one approach, its important to know the benefits and uses, along with areas a career coach isnt meant to rescue you. Here, the dos and donts of hiring your new mentorDo When you are lost or stuck in your careerEven if you used to be enamored with your job, everyone goes through periods where well, they just cant. Career and branding expert Wendi Weiner says when youve hit a crossroads in your career and you arent sure on how to move forward, a career coach can come in handy. Not only do they help you ask the right questions but they provide resources and support for figuring out the next rung on the ladder.Think of someone who has been on a diet for a long time but isnt seeing results, It would be advisable for him or her to hire a nutritionist or a personal trainer. A career coach is a similar type of trained professional, except in the professional world, Weiner continues.Dont If you are looking for greater help in your personal lifeRepeat after Weiner a career coach isnt a therapist. Though they can inspire you to think differently about your professional life and ask some tough questions that get to the heart of your motivations, if youre looking for emotional support, this isnt your best avenue. If you are dealing with personal issues in your life, and you feel you are struggling in certain personal relationships or personal things going on, then you would be better off seeking a mental health counselor as opposed to a career coach, she suggests.Do You want to make a major career change. So you studied accounting- but you were born to be in marketing. You thought youd enjoy nursing, but you are dissatisfied with your daily schedule. Augustine says when youre making a major career change by switching industries, relocating or a mixture of the two, a coach could be your buddy in the process.A coach can help you explore new opportunities to determine how you can realistically turn your passion into a paycheck or leverage your existing skill platzset to target an entirely different field, she explains.Dont You arent open-minded to the advice of a career coachIn theory, having a big brother or sister of sorts to aid your path to success seems great. But if you doubt the validity or the effectiveness, Weiner says chances are high youre going to end up in an unproductive situation. In addition to an open mind, you also need to follow instructions. You must be willing to listen to the advice from the career coach and equally open to doing the homework that is asked of you and the assessments in order to best understand your strengths and skills, she continues. If you arent willing to partake in the structured advice of the career coach, you will find yourself at a crossroad again.Do Your resume isnt getting traction- and neither are interviews.Youve lost count of how many applications youve filled out online - and yet, youre not getting any callbacks. Or, you manage to get first-round interviews, but then potential employers ghost on you. These experiences are frustratin g and can threaten your self-esteem to keep on keepin on. Augustine says a career coach is a perfect person to take a glance at your resume and know exactly what to shift. Or with the use of a mock interview, identify places you can improve. They can evaluate your entire career narrative and help determine if there are specific skills or experience you need in order to be a more attractive candidate for the role youre pursuing, she continues. If youre landing interviews but never making it to the next round, there may be an underlying issue thats standing in your way. A career coach can assess your strengths and weaknesses, and develop a custom plan to help you overcome these challenges and make you a more confident interviewer.Dont You want a magician.By definition, a career coach, well, coaches. Think of it how you would your old high school basketball or softball team leader they ran through drills, critiqued your performance and gave you pointers - but you were the one actually on the field. Augustine says a career coach isnt meant to do all of the hard work for you but to provide the skills necessary for you to arrive at your goal.At the end of the day, its your life and your career. A coach can educate you on the latest job-search best practices and keep you on task throughout the process. A coach can help you practice your interview skills so feel more confident when it really counts, but they cannot attend the actual interview in your place, she continues. Just like you cant outsource your weight loss to a dietician, you cant outsource your job search to a career coach. In order for it to work, you need to regard it as a two-way partnership.

3 Ways to Avoid Recruiting Burnout - Spark Hire

3 Ways to Avoid Recruiting Burnout - Spark HireRecruiting is stressful. Ask anyone in the industry and they will agree. This is one of the reasons why the recruiting industry has a high turnover. Many new and experienced recruiters simply burnout. If you are new to recruiting, or even a senior recruiter, there are several things you need to be doing in order to avoid burnout.1. Manage your timeFirst and foremost, you need to have excellent time management skills in recruiting. Lets face it, you have multiple job openings to work on, job postings to create, candidates to source, candidates to interview, and hiring managers to keep in contact with. On top of all of that, you are receiving numerous phone calls each day from candidates who are looking for work or want to touch base on a position.Figure out what is most important to your success. Make a list and tackle each eintrag on that list, marking it off as you complete each task. Set aside specific time during the day to work on ce rtain items. Perhaps first thing in the morning, you work on job postings and source. Maybe in the afternoon you call top candidates and then return calls and emails later in the day.Figure out what works for you and stick to it. You will quickly burnout if you are not able to manage your time wisely.2.Leave work at workWhen its time to leave the office, whether you are working from home or in an actual office building, you need to find separation. Set boundaries between work and home. When you are at work, stay focused on recruiting. When you are at home, stay focused on your personal life and leave all recruiting matters in the office.I know, I know. You are immediately thinking that recruiting is not an 8 to 5 job. I agree 100%. However, you need to put in allowances for that. If possible, plan to work different hours on different days in order to be able to make those candidate calls in the evenings or early mornings.Whatever you do, do not get caught up in todays new technology , checking emails all hours of the night and taking candidate phone calls whenever they come in. I guarantee you that when you have this personal time away from recruiting you will be able to rest better during your off time, which will allow you to perform at your best the next day.Bottom line, dont be pressured to ALWAYS be on the recruiting clock. You need your down-time in order to avoid burnout.3.Take time offIn the past, it was so difficult for me to understand that taking time away from work was actually beneficial to me and made me much more successful in the long run. Its difficult in recruiting to take time off right in the middle of a candidate search or during final rounds of interviews. However, you need to put a plan in place for these situations and make sure that you are taking your time off.Taking a few days, a week, or even just a half a day can sometimes be enough to recharge your battery. Dont avoid taking your vacation or holidays off and leaving your work at th e office. What are some things you do in order to avoid recruiting burnout? Please share your suggestions in the comments below.Images Yastremska/BigStock.com
